Hello CASSE Friends,
What a week for the Steady Stater to be due. It’s the same week we are finalizing a book, producing a podcast, publishing an article at the Steady State Herald, and orienting our fall semester interns. And, it’s a four-day week, given the Labor Day holiday.
So, pardon me if I keep this short!
Does our schedule seem hectic for a tiny non-profit with four full-time employees? It does to me too. But it also helps to explain why we find more discussion every day about limits to growth and the steady state economy as the sustainable alternative. Our collective voice—CASSE staff, interns, volunteers, and YOU—is being heard in widening circles. We are dedicated to our cause and are changing the world, little by little but with a quickening pace.
You know what I’m supposed to say now: something about joining, donating, volunteering and such. And it’s true that, if enough of that happens, we’ll have five staff instead of four, and the pace will quicken accordingly.
Meanwhile, I better get back to work!

The Steady State Press is proud to unveil the newest book by long-time environmental activist Peter Seidel, Uncommon Sense: Shortcomings of the Human Mind for Handling Big-Picture, Long-Term Challenges. Seidel seeks to answer the question of how we, as a species, have come to this obsession with growth. By exploring issues such as climate change, biodiversity, and pollution, Seidel hits the root of the problem: ourselves. Uncommon Sense is an important call to action to correct our short-comings before it’s too late.

We seek articles for the Steady State Herald that cover economic growth, limits to growth, and the conflicts between economic growth and environmental protection, economic sustainability, national security, and international stability. Maximum word count is 2,000, and we accept submissions on a rolling basis. Authors must adhere to our submission guidelines.

Southern Utah Chapter Director Forrest Woolman
Creates “Principles of Sustainability” Workshop
A former LA Chapter Director, Forrest is now spreading the CASSE message in Southern Utah at Dixie State University. His main project as a director is to offer a “Principles of Sustainability” workshop through the university, which will teach students about steady-state economics and present CASSE’s vision as the most viable solution for a livable world. We look forward to hearing about Forrest’s success with steady statesmanship out west!
In July, CASSE’s executive director, Brian Czech, became an Honorary Member of Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Association (MAREA). MAREA is dedicated to advocating renewable energy and sustainable living in the mid-Atlantic region of the US. Czech’s honorary membership stemmed from his online presentation, “Steady-State Economics for Environmental Protection, Jobs, and National Security.”
How would a Convention on Economic Sustainability compare to past international agreements and treaties? Adyasha Mohanty, a recent masters graduate of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, spent her CASSE summer internship investigating the options. Trade and finance tools in current use would still be a priority, but they would have to be aimed toward contraction and convergence rather than growth.
