The Steady Stater volume 15 number 3 |
Dear *{{Informal Name}}*,
If you’ve ever written a newsletter introduction, you know the biggest challenge: Keeping it concise and focused. Every quarter, I for one would like to lead readers on deep dives into all CASSE projects, followed by waxing philosophically about advancing the steady state economy.
There is no such temptation this quarter, because we have such a clear winner: our pending publication of The Age of Humachines: Big Tech and the Battle for Humanity’s Future. This will be the book to put the Steady State Press (CASSE’s book-publishing imprint) on the map.

Author Michael Harvey has produced a tour de force on a cutting-edge concern: Big Tech’s designs for Homo sapiens. CASSE readers will appreciate the breadth and interdisciplinarity of Harvey’s investigation. Few of us have a handle on AI, robotics, humanizing machines, and machinating humans, much less Big Tech’s vision of turning the world into a humachinated, “ontocapitalist,” interconnected but anti-democratic system. Those who read Humachines will know more than 99 percent of citizens about these fascinating issues and disturbing prospects.
|
| |
|
And here’s a bonus: Harvey is a steady stater who suspects Big Tech won’t accomplish their dubious mission. Why? Because limits to growth will prevent Big Techies from bringing us to the brink of humachination. We find in limits to growth, then, a silver lining as substantial as the Saucito Mine!
To clarify, CASSE is publishing the American edition of Humachines under our Steady State Press imprint. (A European edition already circulates in Europe.) Pre-order your copy now! |

The E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation honors the rich legacy of science and conservation embodied by the late Edward O. Wilson, a CASSE signatory. The Foundation recognizes the deep ties between biodiversity conservation and living within our economic means. It also gives you the opportunity to sign the Half-Earth pledge, which calls for setting aside half of Earth for other species and ecological integrity. (Note how the Half-Earth pledge is reflected in the CASSE logo!).

“I don’t even want to talk about growth. It’s not a word that should be in our active vocabulary,”
Keir Whitson, Vice Chair, Board of Supervisors, Rappahannock County
"Lifting up the poor while protecting the environment should be our only goals. Everything else will improve if we concentrate solely on those two goals,"
Charles Ladd, Raleigh, NC I totally support the CASSE cause. With the root causes of ALL environmental and social problems being over-population and subsequent over-consumption, I believe the CASSE mission is a paramount solution to these problems.
