The Steady Stater             Vol. 14, Issue 1

Dear Steady Stater,

The holidays are past us and 2023 is in full swing. Yet some memories from 2022 are in order, as several great people left us, starting of course with Herman Daly, our intellectual forefather, champion of steady-state economics, and long-time board member.

Last month we lost Haydn Washington, a tireless advocate for the steady state economy and one of CASSE’s most reliable and productive chapter directors.

The renowned futurist Hazel Henderson and the medical research pioneer Arthur Riggs also bid farewell in 2022. Both were CASSE signatories.

Each of these wonderful friends and colleagues would want CASSE to push ahead more vigorously than ever in 2023. We’re set to do precisely that with the most experienced staffer we’ve hired to date. Gary Gardner started as our managing editor on January 23. The longtime Worldwatch Institute writer brings outstanding authoring and editing capabilities to CASSE, plus a well-developed background in limits to growth and natural resources issues.

We’ve also hired Rosalie Bull as a communications assistant. In addition to an English degree from Washington and Lee University and a completed Fulbright scholarship, Rose brings a passionate concern for sustainability and a positive presence to the workplace. She’ll be helping with a wide range of communications activities and products.

The next vacancy we’d like to fill is Policy Specialist. Anyone want to help develop and advance steady-state policies? We’ll be happy to review your application!

And please, always feel free to contact me regarding CASSE projects, present and potential.

Thank you!

Brian Czech, Executive Director

Quotable

“At nearly 80 years old, I am shocked, and deeply saddened, by the rapidity and extent of worldwide degradation. I feel I am doing my part in many ways to reduce my ‘footprint,’ but that my government, controlled as it is by corporate interests, is bent on growth at all costs.”
~Catherine Hudson
